Identity fraud, phishing schemes, and Internet scams are on the rise. According to Gartner Research, more than 5 million U.S. consumers lost money to phishing scams in the 12 months ending in September 2008—nearly a 40 percent increase from the previous year. The VeriSign ‘Fave Green Pics’ campaign will help arm consumers with the knowledge they need to protect themselves against this growing trend.

In this interactive contest, consumers submit their photos to the site and get their friends and family to vote for their photo. The people’s photos with the most votes will get prizes. Users can also follow along on Facebook and Twitter or share their favorite photos with friends. The campaign and contest will announce weekly winners through August 14th and monthly winners following. You can chose between three cool prizes including a Green Cannon Digital Camera, a $250 MasterCard Gift Card, or a Green Flip Video Camera.

Just launched, the website is a great destination to help people discover the easiest, most visible way to stay safe online, especially from phishing. When you see the green address bar in a web browser, it means that the site you’re visiting is exactly who they claim to be. It also means that your information will be encrypted as it travels across the Internet.

I love contests with tangible prizes. Especially ones giving away prizes worth a damn. The Net Fool is giving away a digital camcorder – a Flip Mino (worth $180) and a $50 gift card for Market Leverage, the affiliate network who is sponsoring this contest.

The Flip Mino is a cool little device, smaller than most cell phones. It records up to 60 minutes of video with one-touch functionality and through it’s proprietary software, can post directly to Youtube, AOL Video, Myspace, and other websites. It’s great for bloggers and product reviewers who just need something inexpensive but quality. I might actually buy this thing if I don’t win the contest. It got a perfect 5-star rating on Amazon from nine reviewers.
